The original 56 series boxes are very, very fragile, I ran one behind a v strong A13, and it was a 'warm it up first on axles stands' kind of a gearbox.. It was stripped and rebuilt every year to keep it together.
The 60 series (B310) boxes are pretty good, stroke them along and they'll be good to you. The 63 (stanza) box is the ultimate A series box, great ratios too, but hard to find now. Dellow list a bellhousing to put the little Toyota box (T50?) behind the A motors. Probably the best bet in this day and age. I understood the number was the centre distance between shafts too!

Another thing to consider guys is that an original 1200 4 speed is likely to be over 30 years old now so how reliable can you expect them to be??? 30 yrs qualifys them to be eligible to join a vintage car club in NZ All the componants which were fragile to begin with are likely to be fairly tired by now, it's time to look at other options if you are running a modified engine. Even rear drive Toymotor stuff is getting scarce. I got a bill for a Ford Toploader input shaft the other day for nearly $400.00 dollars as it was NOS but a new freshly machined part was even more. The older the car gets the more it costs to keep them reliable !!

Someone mentioned a celica box. Is that the T2 or T3 box?? With a dellow kit how much panel work is required to make one fit into a manual ute?

I'm sorry to hear of your bad luck with gearboxes. I used the original 1000 box behind my big bore 1200GX for a short while untill i got the 5 speed, never a moments drama with either one. The stock 1000 box remained in my wife's '68 1000 2 door with a mildly improved 1200 [flat top pistons, mild cam, A14 carb, & 1000 coupe exhaust manifold] It's still on the road with that box, 15 years later. The stock 1200 box stayed in my 1200 ute, even after i re-used the displaced 76mm pistons in it that came from my GX [when i wore it out & went to 76.5mm]. The ute was sold to a bloke near a beach & the body rusted out, but the original box was still in it to the end. I guess that i must have just had GOOD luck. It wouldn't have had anything to do with the way i drive.

am i right in thinking that the 60 series gearboxes are out of the 120ys or the a14 sunnys? what gearbox is behind the australian a15 motors and will it fit in a manual trans tunnel of a 1200? i totally agree that how u drive the car has a lot to do with it hanging together. i want to be able to push the car through the gears but no flatchanging or dumps.

You are absolutely correct, the later, bigger A14 / A15 gearboxes are definately stronger. I believe that the bousing is also larger in diameter & i am unsure just how well that they fit into the early trans tunnel. Perhaps someone who knows for sure can tell us.

Many of us have the 60-series trans from the B310/Sunny/210 -- it fits in the standard B110 manual tunnel.

Yep,
I've got in the shed a 4 speed out of a Sunny(B210) - the sunny was an A12. Any differences between this box and my standard 1200 4 speed.
