is it possible to change 3rd gear on main shaft from another gearbox to bring it closer to 2nd. Any ideas

Even if another ratio were to be available, you would need to change the cluster gear to match.

Depending on which box you have, vanette gears/countershaft sets are used to fix this problem I believe. I havent done it myself.
