my blown 5 speed

hi all, i went for a cruze last week, sitting in 5th using my dogleg sunny gearbox. i shifted back to 4th but my gearbox didnt want to work, i couldnt shift to any other gears. so i had to pull over and get atow. the selector whas shifting when i used the clutch but the gears would not engage. now i have the car at a garage, they are saying that all the gears are blown and they can get parts to fix it and it would cost over $2000 just for the parts.does this sound right im not that flush with cash at the moment so that (paying $2000+) is probably out of the question + i also have seen a stanza style box (stronger) for sale for $1100 (although i dont think i can really afford this either) or i can put my 4 speed back in and worry about the fith gear when my funds recover
so what do you guys think, does it sound like my mechanics are right about all of the gears blowing?. could there be a cheaper option? i do know that it is a rare geabox any comments or responses are welcome

hehehehe
sorry to laugh, but i had the same thing happen to my box after racing at wanneroo - and i was in the middle of a hillstart at the time it blew!!! just had to roll it backwards down the hill and call for a tow too. undid the sump nut on the box and allki got was this "tok-tok-tok-tok" sound of ballbearings falling outta my box.... the only remedy is another box at that stage, the shafts will be pitted and the journals will be scored to the sh1thouse, so a recond box is the expensive option out (esp. at $2k!!!). dellow have a bellhousing and gearbox kit for the celica 5spd onto the A series for around $1750. the boxes are inspected as well. why would you recon a g'box for $2k when you can have the best shifting box on the planet for $250 less...?!

who told you $1750 for the Dellow conversion? Is that fited?
The conversion kit cost $650 last time I asked, but I don't think it comes with a x-member. A good secondhand Toyota 2T/3T box can be picked up for around $250-300. And a modified tailshaft shouldn't cost more than $150.

I'd put the 4-speed back in, and wait for better finances or a good deal on a 5-speed ...

that's an inspected and re-bearinged / resealed box, bellhousing, clutch goodies (fork, thrust bearing etc) and a good yoke.
so yeah, that $1750 includes the reco'd box.
