#1 turbo sizing?
bones Posted on: 2004/3/14 17:21
Can any of you tell me what size my turbo is that I bought my ute with. Turbine is a Garret T4; BUT the compressor has the following stamped on it: a/r.50 m-12 L
I was told its a TO4E compressor housing, it also has a built in polished inlet plenum, which sticks out about 40mm for the airfilter boot (100mm id) to fit over. Can someone shed light on this??

So wot sort of ute do u have? Is it a 1200? Cos f@#k if u got a T04 in a lil 1200 it would blow the engine its way to much power for it. Cos at the moment ive got a T04 in a VL Calais and its got 600hp. But yes neways cant help wiv the size but my dad is a turbo mechanic and he works for Garrett here in Sydney so i can find out.

This is a really big problem with second hand turbos. unless you know where they come from, getting parts, or application information will be quite difficult.

0.5x is quite small for a T04 compressor housing. Normally they are 0.64 0.86 ..

Take a photo of the front (aluminium housing) and the rear exhaust housing. Try and get a clear photo of the detail on A/R.

Guys, please remember that the HP rating on the turbo is just that..an operating power rating. It won't give your engine that amount of HP.

You'd need to run an A12 at 16,000 RPM with tricky fuel to utilise a turbo of that size.

The 0.5 A/R is a ratio thing, so a T04 with A/R 0.54 is much bigger that a T25 with a A/R 0.70. Also remember that there's compressor (intake) A/R and Turbine (exhaust) A/R.

I've heard that intake and exhaust A/Rs should be similar.

Chris.

The turbo is on a 2 litre 16valve DOHC FE3 mazda motor in a 1200 ute. Boost threshold is a tad under 4000rpm which pulls until about 7900 odd rpm (where my limiter is at). I need to identify the compressor housing size, upgrade is in the pipeline! I'll post some pics in the photo area, if anyone recognises the size please drop me a line
