If the rules are the same as in NSW...yes, you would become bubba's shower buddy after an accident.

The SR20s size also makes it harder to work on. The Gearbox diameter is a squeeze, even in a Auto Tunnel.

I think you'd find a 2.3NA SR20DE would give you enough power, you'd never need to put a turbo on. Mate, with more than 150kW (200HP) at the wheels...You would struggle to keep the car on the road. The torque would make it a monster!

And you wouldn't be hassled half as bad for insurance.

So, it's worth thinking about. But I still think the CA18DET is the go.

When I got my 1200. The plan was engine swap and I looked in to the SR20. I went to a input wreckers and got the tape out and measured everything up. I came to the conclusion it would be a difficult fit.

The CA18 was considerably cheaper and overall a more logical choice.

Having said that a few years ago I saw a NZ 1200 in a magazine with a SR20DET. It was registered however the vechicle had had considerable firewall and transmission tunnel modifications.

If you want a SR20 and can get the required approval from the RTA. Go for it.

In WA you can get pre approval and guidance when going outside their guidelines. However a engineer needs to become involved. Is this the same in other states?

are you sure about the 2.3L na? because i have a RTA guidelines for light vehicle modifications thing infront of me and it says for an aspo the rule is

original weight (kg) x 3.0 (this being roughly 720kg x 3 = 2160cc) this stating the original capacity allowed in an engine meaning you can put an L20 in and stroke it to 2.4L but it still counts as 2.0L. the way i see it is you are only aloow a standard capacity engine of 2.1 because i dont think there are any engine above 2150 but below 2160 to be classified as a 2.2L engine and im not aware of any 2.1L engines you may want. not trying to be rude but thats the way i thought it was??? correct me if im wrong?

In queensland, if you stick within the RTA's ruling, that being 1820cc Turbo engine limit (as the CA18 is 1809cc) Mod plates are only required, which basicaally they just look at you install and say yep thats safe, the brakes are good, then they charge you something like $25 a mod to check out (a mod being, different gearbox, different engine, different mounts, etc......)

But if you wish to go outside the RTA's ruling, like whacking an SR20DET into a 1200, then a full Engineers certificate is needed which cost bout $700.

So if you have the money then you could go an SR20

Cheers

I know it's slightly off-topic, but I love America.

Nobody cares what size engine we stuff in there as long as the brakes work and the lights work.
