#1 Exhaust Output
1956 Posted on: 2004/7/13 3:48
Had the Ute for a couple of months now and am getting the feel for the Dattos.

One worry I have is what comes out of the exhaust when i start the car in the morning. The ute does not blow smoke but spits black crap over by driveway. I does not appear to be oil as it rubs of the driveway without to much fuss.

Any hints??

By the way, I think the motor runs rich as the fuel level is way over the middle point of the window in the side of the carb ie almost to the top if not over. Carby is next to get the treatment.

You've pretty well answered your own question... it sounds like it is fuel... this is common to many older cars running rich, especially when cold... make sure the engine is tuned correctly and you may see a drop in the amount of soot.

Also, compresion may also be a factor.

Simple datsun exhaust systems don't hide the water build up in the system. If you had bigger mufflers, the condensation buildup would evaporate better, or not get blown out the back. You might also have a slightly leaky headgasket, letting coolent get into the engine cylinders when the engine is hot. The richness is what is leaving the black soot in the exhaust, making the water black and oily looking.
