I'm currently upgrading this single master cylinder setup:



I'm putting stanza struts into my 1200 wagon.

What master cylinder should I get from the wreckers? (I've been told 120y is the go) And will I need to get the steel brake lines off the car I take the master cylinder off? Or can I re-bend my old brake lines and 'make' them fit. Thanks.

When it comes to the plumbing, you will find that most 1200's came with the dual circuit master cylinder. You must have an early production car.

To make it work you will need most of the dual circuit piping plus [i think] the brass block on the firewall

This might at least help out with that part of your problem if you get down to the wrecker, or can access a junk 1200.

A mate of mine who used to race a 1200 coupe said that early subarus had a twin resoivoir master cylender, identical to a 1200 one, only with a bigger bore.

man, I'm scared just looking at that set up Doesn't really say STOP!! does it (lol) But you are carrying less weight therefore theoretically quicker than dual cylinder ?

Surely someone on here has changed their master cyl to match stanza brakes ?? Whats the best donor vehicle?.. a 120y ?

I am also in the process of updating my single master cylinder to a twin set up.
A few things to remember, the brake block on the single cylinder enters from the underside,on the twin it enters from the side and the rear brake pipe comes directly from the cylinder so you will have to track down a new rear brake pipe and by the way I am still after one any help guys

Running a booster also are we ?
If so get the booster and master off the same car and make them fit. 180B is a popular choice so is LA/LB Lancer.
If you just going to fit the master straight to the firewall I'd probably suggest the Sunny master cylinder.
Its 13/16" bore and should do the job nicely.
Only thing is that your cyl has a captive pushrod. ie. it is attached to the cylinder and held in place with a circlip and washer. The Sunny one isn't as its usually mounted to a booster.
So you will need to fabricate a new pushrod to go between pedal and master.
I do this for my 1000 conversions when I put disc brakes onto them.
There are pics. Ask dato1000ute as he took them when we did his car. It shows how it is all piped up too.

Ade, Is it possible to make up new brake lines ? would it be possible to make an extension to the rear line to reach the new master cylinder?

I used a 180b M/C with stanza/bluebird brakes and it worked sweet. you'll need the brass spliter as well.

If you bring me the ends I can make up the lines for you. I have a double flare kit, professional bending set and a lot of practise on my car. You'd have to come up to Castle Hill on a day when I'm working on my car. I have a length of brake tube from a VN commodore..if you dare

Getting a splitter is a good idea. I split the rear line down next the chassis rail.

But most brake places will do it for cheap, but brake pipe is easily bent, and you can normally get the right lengths at the wreckers.
