#1 Im going SR!!
Quinn Posted on: 2004/10/15 12:14
Ive decided to put a SR20 motor in my 2 door. I have found a mid 90s s14 silv. which has had a big snot in the back but otherwise complete and running for $400. So my plan is to take the engine, wiring loom/computer etc, front suspention and brakes, M/C and rear brakes and front seats and other bit of crap that will fit in the 1200. Problem number one. its an auto so i have to find a box. number two; i have no idea how to do the swap. Ive been told ill need to transplant the s14 tunnel into the 1200 to get the box in but I REALLY dont want to chop up the 1200. Is there a smaller box that will handle a standard sr20 and will fit in (happy to use a bit of force!!) a 1200 tunnel. Ive also been told that ill need to use the s14 mounts and cut the top face of the crossmember (and reposition it lower) to fit the sr in. Ive had a breef look and I know im being lazy but if any of you sr boys could give me tips and an indication as to what needs to be done it would been realy cool.
Cheers
Quinn.

Can you run the Auto ECU with a manual box? i thought the ECU are graphed different with Auto box models....

oh? I have no idea. I thought it wouldnt make a difference. couldnt you just re-chip it? See I ned help i have no idea what to expect! as far as boxs go I was thinking L series? T50? I need something small (would like to have 5 gears but could do 4).

Just use a SR 5speed. find a auto tunnel 1200, cut it out. Then cut your manual tunnel out and weld the 1200 auto tunnel in. I have been told those Auto tunnels have heaps of room.

I wouldnt look at fitting other gearbox because of bellhousing differences. Best thing is finding the Sr20de 5speed and modding the tunnel i reckon.

The CA18 and SR20 Gearboxes are the same, except for the bellhousing (which is a big part of the gearbox casing).

So get a R30 L2.4E Gearbox from a Skyline, and go about mating them up. You might need a couple of different bearings. The gearbox will come up the original hole, and if it's and auto, it will fit perfectly in the tunnel, and will be easy to fabricate a GB mount.

Hope this helps.

I believe they are the same GB (DE vs. DET), different flywheel and clutch more likely.

Don't disregard the auto, just because it isn't a 5 speed manual. With that much grunt in a light car like a 1200, it would take only a little tweaking at a good auto trans specialist to make it a real eye opener.
This would save you lots of dramas [& cash] like finding & buying a manual trans, organising a clutch hookup, sourcing a flywheel & clutch, sorting out the ECU problem, & disposing of the auto trans.

I don't think that you can use the tunnel with either trans option, so the workload & cost will probably be the same for both.

Fit a 'Line lock' system,.. drive to the line, lock the front brakes, then just gently feed it some power. It's a special feeling as your trans upshifts while the car is still stationary & the auto can be a lot less stressfull on the rear end as well.

Back in the days of the hairy chested,.. real mans performance car, the Shelby AC Cobra was almost exclusively manual trans equiped.
Two cars were built with auto's. One was ordered by Bill Cosby, & the other is still owned by the original purchaser, Mr Carrol Shelby himself. Neither of these cars was disadvantaged by the auto trans in the performance stakes, & your two door need not be either.

Think twice [thrice?] then act once,.. with confidence.

Yes the Auto SR20's use a different ECU than the manual transmission. I'm not too sure on S14's, my experience is with S13's. The auto ECU is labeled "63" and the manual is labeled "62". M/T ECU's are easy to get and cheap. If you run an automatic you will be unable to use an Apexi Power FC and it will be difficult to find a reburnt or upgraded ECU for an Auto unless you find a place that can do it for you, but then you're talking $$$$. So go ahead with the manual tranny I say unless you want consistency at the drag strip. Since your 1200 is Right Hand Drive, and non automatic (I'm guessing) it is easiest for you to just cut out the S14 transmission tunnel and graft it into the 1200, which isn't too hard. M/T and A/T Silvia's use the same tranny mounting points. I have seen this process done in a 1200 Ute here in Japan by Matsuoka Motorsports. If you have an auto 1200 body you can get away with just a little trimming and recutting the tunnel for the shifter and moving the E-brake back. I would try to use the Silvia tranny as they are readily available and affordable. If you go mixing and matching trannies together to get something smaller it's going to cost you more and when it breaks you've got to do everything over again. You will have to cut off the old engine mounts and construct and reweld new ones. It would make mounting a little easier to find thinner engine mounts to use, but the stock SR mounts CAN work fine if you build the mounts on the crossmember right. I'm still trying to find my digital camera, as I've got pics of everything on there, but I will try to get pictures and post them on my SR20DET Conversion Page

Good luck with your project!

I dont realy want to keep the auto and if the ecu is a cheep and easy swap Ill go manual. It will be in standard form so I dont need to worry about proformance chips. The reason for wanting a smaller different gearbox is to avoid choping the tunnel out of the 2door. To me it is worth spending the $$ and time to not have to chop up my car. If it was a coupe or 4 door it wouldnt bother me but I want it all to be reversable if possable. What about the ford box from behind the ztec? Would an L series fit and handle the power (rember its going to stay prety standard). I NEED to get a different box, choping is out of the question.
Cheers.

I agree, don't hack it up. There's always another way.
What about your coupe? Do you still race it?
