#1 Locked H145.
A14force Posted on: 2004/11/22 7:52
I'm in the throws of fitting a locked H145 to the blown datto.
I know that it is a neanderthol cure for my traction woes,(so no lectures please) but I was wondering how much grunt/abuse it's likley to withstand before the inevitable?
It will only be in use till I can find an H165 head so I can build a phantom grip, But I'm busting to run it at the next drags, so my hans are tied.

Perhaps you could stage a lottery with everyone on the site having a guess at how long it will last. With the torque your engine is producing and your reputation for giving it heaps I reckon it might last 2 weeks

I'm in. I'l give it three full-on launches before something breaks. Thats with good rubber, not 12" crossply's with 60lbs of air.

Yeah, I'm a bit worried about the stageing. I've been given some old tyres off a formula ford, to help put the power down. I'll be pretty gutted if she blows before I get to post a time.

I give it two days of moderate street driving (that's how long the H145 lasted behind my stock A15).

put me down for the first time you let the clutch out.it'll be the axles which let go , however.they step down where the splines
go into the centre.if you're lucky, you'll break both at the same time & the car won't take a voilent turn to the left or the right.wait til you find a h165 before welding it up.

Whist I agree that H145 axles are like toothpicks !! - I ran a welded H145 in my coupe for a year without drama. Admittedly only behind an A14 but it was not treated kindly ...... While your car sounds a bit beyond the H145 capabilities, usually it is side stepping the clutch that causes problems. Shock loads will kill components long before the same force applied linearly.
If in doubt - go for the 29 spline H190
Cheers

I reckon if you really try you will be able to total the diff on the first launch.

is this your daily driver? If so I don't reckon you'll make it to the drags. low speed trundling around town/subarbia is hell on axles with locked diffs. I give it 3 days normal driving.

But if you're still running the 60a box, I reckon that will still be the first thing to scream "enough!" at the drags before the axles.

No, it's not my everyday car. It's way to hard on fuel for that.
Unfortunatly, drag racing is very much about shock loading of the driveline, with a hard launch being half the battle. I think I'll be taking a tow rope to the track.
I guess time will tell.
