#1 Driveline vibration help!!!
LAGWAGON Posted on: 2005/2/27 12:05
Okay, here's the saga...

I have an intermitant vibration that occurs between say 65-85 kmph, only when cruising. if i accellerate out of it it goes away. i can travel at 100kmph and its not there anymore! it feels like a driveline vibe, not really coming through the steering wheel.

i have a hilux diff, low leafs, anti tramp rods (which seem to rest on the leaves) new shocks.

the vibration happened with the a12, 4spd and balanced tailshaft and still happens with the CA18, 5spd and different balanced tailshaft.

i went to a diff guy... not the diff. if it was the vibration would get worse and not go away at higher speeds. they were addimant it wasn't the diff!

went to a transmission guy and he took it for a drive and said "driveline vibe". maybe the angle of the tailshaft.

took it to a motor rebuilder with experience in diff and motor conversions... not the angle of the tailshaft (nearly dead straight)... maybe front end wheel allignment.

went and got a wheel allignment (toe only, castor and camber still vary side to side). the vibe seems worse!!!

any ideas??? its like a shudder. i can go 100 on the fwy, and when i have to go 80 through the tunnel it goes burzurk! this is peeeving me greatly

Have you checked your tire balance? I have the same thing happening to my ute right now at 45-60 kph. It only happened when I changed wheels a couple weeks ago. I haven't switched back to see if that was it for sure but I'm pretty sure that's it. Mine's not really bad but it's really noticable when you look at the shifter... I've got a shot gearbox mount and the shifter ocsillates at these speeds.

yep, have had different rims and tyres on. the current ones were balanced when put on about two months ago. gearbox mount is also solid. seems like i'm ruling out everything... its gotta be something!

I would be looking at the tyre balance too if it comes and goes at those speeds

:edit: ok should rule that out

i throw on some balanced ones tomorrow and see how i go... but i've had lots of different combos on, all changed and paid for at the local tyre joint balanced and fitted... all vibrate

wheel bearing or dodgy brake pad???

where do you notice the vibration? the whole car/steering wheel/brake pedal?

I can feel my steering wheel shudder when i brake from about 80km/h. I'm pretty sure one of my disks is not quite straight, and so it grabs on certain spots on the disc, and not on others.

I have come accross a simalar problem on a mates commodore. He did a hadfeild toyota 5 speed conversion on it but for got to put lock tight on the fly wheel so it vibrated about a month later.

hope its not the flywheel, i couldn't be stuffed pulling the motor out again.

new thought... i have mazda stud pattern drums on the datsun stud pattern axles, and had to replace one of them, filing it out a little. might this be it?
