Hey iam trying to to a 12a rotary turbo conversion to my 1200 ute. QLD transport said N/A was fine but for turbo i had to send away a"Motor vehicle modification application". What i want to no is if anyone elses has done the conversion and what they put on the sheet. I plan to put stanza struts up front so i can put big wheels under it and vn commodore brakes up front and a shortened vn diff with vn brakes. Not shore bout the master cyl yet possably vn or rx2. If needed i will put a bias adjuster in too. i will have to enlarge the tunnel housing to fit a series 4 rx7 gear box in. What else will i need to have a better chance at getting aproval? Iam going to claim the fact that a 12a turbo has less horse power than a ca18det standard. plz help

This can easily be shortened. If you can't see what to do yourself, talk to Mazfix. They do this mod regularly.

Mazfix have also done the conversion you speak of a few times so should be able to give you a few pointers.

my biggest piece of advice is -

talk to an engineer BEFORE you start your project. no engineer will be happy you showing up, mounts all painted and looking - to him - like a dogs breakfast and you asking him to certify it.

get his advice, drill him for his knowledge and apply it properly. get him to inspect each stage BEFORE it's neatened up and painted etc etc so he can inspect welds, check for heat thinning from welding etc etc.

i've done this, and while adding about $650 to the cost of my conversion, i can be assured of a certificate upon final inspection and KNOW that i'm not going to have to pull the whole lot apart to "add a web here" or "smooth that stress point out there".

small things like that can ruin your whole year.

sometimes I think you guys in AU are lucky, here in the states, unless you have friends at a race fabrication shop you can't count on even the simplest mod being done right, and nobody will stand behind any thing that isn't a stock replacement.

Sure they give you a hard time because you want to have 200 HP on the stock brakes, but it's better than being turned out with unsafe vehicles.

hey most places these days are only interested in ricing up hyundais - you know, "bolt on" mods like neons and wheels and plastic and sh1t.

there's no guarantee that you'll get a good car at the end of a conversion. trouble is, someone has changed an engine a cupla times and the car still runs and suddenly they're an "expert" conversion workshop

the only way to guarantee quality work is to consut an engineer and LEARN to do it yourself. that way, if something goes wrong, you can fix it and know how to fix it.

Well this wont be my first conversion and im in my 3rd year of a mechanic apprentiship so i can do nearly all of it. I just want to no how people managed to get aproval? The engineer said he couldnt approve it unless i had written aproval from qld transport. I want to no how people managed to get the approval eg brakes and so on...... And does anybody no of any sites whith this conversion on them? Yes the series 4 is long, ill be relocating the hand brake and sitting the engine forwards. any comments apreciated

sorry i dont mean to steal the thread but is it legal in nsw to put a 12a turbo into a ute and if so does this mean you can put a 13b na in. i was just wondering because ive been told that the rta recognise them both as having the same output???

It sounds to me that the engineer wants paperwork to say QLD Transport will register this Car/Engine combo. Then the engineer will tell you what he wants done before he will certify it.
