Mechanical/Vacum Distributor
General
Posted on: 2005/4/20 19:32
Does anyone know where I could find a Mechanical distributor for an A15? Or... Does anyone know where I could get ported vacum off of my duel 40 DCOE's for my current distributor?

I just got off the phone with redline webers tech line. It turns out that there is no ported vacum at all on a DCOE. Every thing is manifold vacum. What does everyone do on this site about there vacum distributor? Mine just doesnt have enough advance.

you'd have to recurve the dizzy or maybe run more static advance.
look up dizzy curve modification

I run mechanical advance on the race engine

I wonder if the twin Webbers will allow the engine to develop enough vasuum to work the vacuum diaphram anyway.
If you can mount a vacuum guage, connected to the manifold [even if only temporarily] see if you can get some vacuum numbers at 3,000 rpm in cruise mode, & in 500 rpm increments above that, to as high as you like, as long as you are in light throttle cruise mode. Fitting a vacuum controlled distributor may not be the way to go anyway if the vacuum figures are low enough.

I have all ready tried that. I used the manifold vacuum and i was at full advance all the time. This would not work... I am in the process of recurving my vacuum advance dist. right now. I am hoping to obtain about an extra 10-15 degrees of advance on the mechanical portion.
dattoman_1000: Where did you find a full mechanical dist.? Ive called Mallory, MSD, Acell and a whole bunch more no one had a distributor for me.

I just took one of the springs out of the mechanical portion making it advance quicker, then set it to 28 degrees total advance. Works great.
Not sure if the points dizzys can be modded the same way but they're probably not much different in the design of the mechanical advance workings.

I didn't, & never would, suggest that you run the distributor directly to manifold vacuum. This is just dumb. I suggested that you use a Vacuum guage to measure the level of vacuum at various engine speeds, in cruise condition. I was speculating that there might not be enough vacuum, when dual Webbers are used, to take advantage of the vacuum advance function anyway. Gathering data with the vacuum guage was just the first step.
