#1 ute rearend bouncing like a bunny
Losadel Posted on: 2005/4/26 14:09
what the topics says, this is not the first time this has happend to me.

I was exiting a sharp lefthand corner almost going straight and stepping on the accelerating ( stock a14 )when all of a sudden the rearend started bouncing like i had hydraulics installed. It bounced high enough to break tracktion on the wheels and enough for the wheels to get some momentum going so that when comming down and regaining tracktion to jolt the ute forward and bang my head against rear window. This happend three times in a row

Is this a commen thing for ute's to do or should I get a specialist to check things out for me

TIA

Yes i think this's a common thing for ute's mine get's it if you dum the clutch hard in the rain and sometime's in the dry.

A specialist said to me to put in nolathane bush's in the rear and that should get rid of most of it.

It`s only a common thing on utes (or anything else) when your leaf springs are s*#t !!!!
Remedy ? Buy a new set of leaves, shocks and urethane bushes and stop complaining!

Leaf springs & bushes :Pedders suspension Penrith
Shocks: Anywhere!

edit: Oops ! just read you are from S.Africa.
Apologies. Try getting your leaf springs reset

I'd check your shocks first before simply replacing everything.

I'm with L18 on this....sounds like the leaves are oscillating [axle tramp] and the shocks are not doing their job in reducing this effect. I would check out the shocks.

As a workaround, you could gaffertape up your intake filter (except for a couple of square inches). That'll reduce the car's power, improve fuel economy, and stop the tramping..

Cheers,
Chris

ps. I am joking.

Another option is to fit some decent seats that have a headrest. This should at least stop your head hitting the window

The purpose of the shock is to allow the spring to absorb the vertical displacement loads [bumps] by compressing, then control the rate of release of the stored energy. A firm shock does this wonderfully well, while a worn, or unserviceable one just lets the spring return to its normal position much too quickly.
When the spring returns to its normal position, you gota remember that it can't push the wheel down, so it pushes the body up,..... too far, so the body bounces up & down, changing the tractive force on the tyres from a little to a lot. If you're hooking into it, then axle windup is another complicating factor.

The point?
Pull your rear shocks & check them. If they are below par, then replace them. This is relatively easy & not too expensive. Only replace those components that are actually faulty, or do not provide a satisfactory performance. That means that i think a set of urethane spring bushes would be a good idea too.
Spring replacement is really only a last resort.
