#1 Are 120Y Discs worth the effort?
vex66 Posted on: 2005/5/19 14:35
I want to upgrade the standard brakes on my daughters 1200 sedan & don't really want to go to Stanza brakes because of the hassle & more particularly the increased offset. Has anyone done the upgrade to 120Y Discs? Are they any good?

Hi vex, i did this swap a while ago on my partners 1200 sedan, she couldnt stand the drums we would adjust them then two or three hard stops later and they were stuffed again. Im now taking these out in preference of the stanza ones. I personally think they are worth the effort, you can just swap them over with the stock 1200 ones and just use the 1200 strut top. easy as that, from your other thread you already have a tandem m/c so thats it. Cheers

absolutely, I have done the swap it is the easiest upgrade on a 1200.
It will feel like a new car when done.

you will still be able to run the same wheels, so no problem with increased offset in that regard, may have to lip guards but i doubt it, unless you have fatish tyres already, the offset shouldnt change much as with mine i have increade the offset again to achieve more negative camber and still my wheels fit under the guards now they are lipped

as said 1200 strut tops, 120y castor rods, stanza everything else, and it will all bolt in, while you have the stanza struts out pour the oil out of the shock (measuring how much comes out as im not sure the capacity) and put in the same amount of 20/50 engine oil to stiffen up the front for a bit better handeling (doesnt make it stupidly stiff or anything, just nice)

and..... while getting the 120y wcastor rods grab the 120y swaybar for a bolt up upgrade (17mm to 20mm) and she will turn in beuatifully, even if your daughters not after good handeling it will make a nicer car to drive (non boat like)

1200 rallycar, he doesnt want to do the stanza swap,
120y struts he wants, they will just bolt to the 1200 steering arm easy as that! Ive only done this with the early 120y so dont rely on my info if is a later model one. Cheers Sean

They are better to avoid brake fade.

They are only marginally better for emergency stops with a full car of people.

New car feeling? maybe 120Y feeling

If the donor struts are in good condition, and less than $50, go for it.

try & get the pbr caliper'ed 120y struts from an australian assembled car.the calipers are the same as a s(t)igma's.the discs are bigger,& they
are the same length as 1200's,if you use the 1200 strut tops.dont forget to change the master cylinder to the 1200 coupe one,& change the rear wheel cylinders from 13/16's to 11/16's or you'll wear out the rear pads extremely quickly.i used exactly this set up in a 1200 wagon with a 1510 cc a14,etc,& the brakes were so good the police car almost ran into the back of me when they pulled me over for speeding.the only problem is standard 1200 wheels wont fit over the stub axle, but 120y ones will.perfect excuse to put 13" mags on it.

Thanks, it's already got 14" hotwire mags (old school). I thought I'd seen my last set of hotwires. I must attract them, I've had so many but always on the car when I bought it. I never really liked them much myself but Cole does.
