#1 turbocharged 100cc 2-stroke
Joelman Posted on: 2005/6/21 5:18
hey, this is very off topic and nothing to do with datsuns, but i thought someone might be able to shed some light on this...

My friend recently got his hands on an old honda XR100 2 stroke. and for fun, we might attempt to turbocharge it.

main problems: the fact thats its so tiny (100cc) and would need a tiny turbo. also the fact that its 2stroke will stuff us around alot im sure...

have any of you seen something like this done? any ideas or comments?

you'll want a small IHI turbo, like even smaller than the pissy little RHB34 found on the 660cc suzuki cappucino. seriously, the exhaust outlet on these is smaller than a 10c piece!

if not, the use the RHB34 and make a reducer pipe to aid spool up - ie like a 2 stroke expansion pipe but in reverse.

it's still be like fitting a T88 to a charade though!

I have personally always wanted to turbocharge a postie bike.
Everyone I mention this to, always points out that you need a very very small turbo and that would be the hardest part.

Perhaps a little supercharger instead?
I dunno

i think your main problem would be pumping the pressure into the crank case... you would have to upreage the seals so they don't blow out... this would be a job and a half as you would have to make them all yourself...

Here is another option

If it is indeed a Honda XR100, it is a four stroke. If it's a two stroke, it's a CR. Quick to tell the difference, if the exhaust looks to be the same diameter all the way to the muffler, it's a four stroke.

I've had half a dozen XR's and worked on a dozen more. Currently I have a XR650L. Street legal dirtbike.

I believe that to be the case also.
The only time I have heard of anyone doing this to a 2 stroke, was one of the boys at CAS years ago on a gokart. Last I heard of it was the piston took the cylinder and head for a fly.
I dont know if he ever tried anything else with it again.

you could probably make a supercharger with the right bits

I tried to supercharge an old clapped out 2 stroke model aeroplane engine in the shed when I was kid, hoping for a nice loud bang and some broken bits to show the lads. Used a bit of comressed air, straight into the venturi (with the propellor removed and a flywheel in place instead). Never got any stunning results out of it though. At minimal pressure it revved a tiny bit harder (or at least I kept telling myself it was..... not easy to pick the difference between 15 and 16K rpm), but with a bit more boost it either wouldnt run, or would only just kick over, sounding really sick. I was spewin I never got it to blow up.

I reckon its because the boost is working against the motor. The fuel mix is in the crank case and goes into the cylinder via the transfer port as the piston comes down. When you boost the engine it just increases the pressure in the crankcase and stops the piston from coming back down.

Pretty much just ####ting in your own nest with that one. It may be different with perhipheral ported and multi cylinder2 strokes though..... I dont know enough about them.

sounds liek your only "power adder" option is N2O...?
