#1 1200 ute steering box
prodat Posted on: 2005/8/1 6:22
Unfortunately the 1200 ute didn't pass rego. One of the problems was with the play in the steering (up and down). After pulling it to bits it looks as though it's on a slide but we couldn't work out why it should move. There are also two pin holes that look like they may have had something in them to hold the rod in place but can't be sure. Anyone know anything about these?

Also if anyone has one for sale let me know.

Hi prodat,
I think this subject has been covered before in previous posts and is fixable. Use the search bar at the left to find old info re steering columb bushes etc.
Bummer about Rego.
I am considering doing an SR20DET into a coupe so at some stage I would like to have a good look at your ute if it is possible.

paul.

Thanks mate, will do another search. I did a brief one before but couldnt bring up anything.

The ute isn't mine but I am sure the owner would be more than happy to show you.

In a collapsable column there are nylon "taps" inside the middle of the column which regallary break if the column has had a large shunt in an accident or if you have tried to use excessive force to remove a steering wheel. Not sure how to get it out but is is a simple thing to replace those nylon taps and reinsert the shaft. or you can but mine wiith all steering linkages for $120

On that subject my stearing box is shagged also, tons of play left to right... Now would it be more beneficial to replace the old one or get new parts for it? What other cars boxes would fit? Im guessin a 120Y or Stanza would fit yeah?

Cheers
Dave

thanks converted/all. I'm guessing its not worth spot welding it to fix it (dangerous no doubt too).

I might have found one locally but will let you know otherwise.

Thanks again.

If you get really stuck I could probably machine up any bushes that you need, its just that I am very busy at the moment.
PM me if necessary.

I had my steering box rebuilt for about $350 by a local engineering shop. Made a huge difference to the car.

On the top of the steering box is an adjusting screw with a lock nut , have you had the play adjusted by a mechanic or someone who knows what they are doing ? , if it is adjusted too tightly you will damage it , that too will make a difference
because that is what it is for !!
