#1 A14 re-commission... what do I need to do?
sprite63 Posted on: 2005/8/3 1:26
Ok I need some advice...

I've managed to get my hands on a complete A14 engine and 5 speed gearbox - (not telling anyone how much I did not pay for it) - but it has not run in about 6 years. It came out of a running car of a mate of mine when he stuck a Toyota Twin Cam in his Morris Minor instead. The A14 is pretty standard, apart from a mild cam and double valve springs. I trust the guy so I know that the engine was fine when removed, so here's what I need to know.

What things do I need to do to re-commission this engine? Apart from changing all of the fluids is it safe to just check/adjust the head bolts, tappets etc and if all is ok just fit it? What things can perish if an engine has been sitting for 6 years?

The 5-speed was re-built but never fitted... so that will be fine.

Any advice from the Datto experts out there will be highly appreciated.

Matt.

does it still turn over by hand? of not might need new piston rings and a quick hone on the bores (put new bearings in as well while your there).
If it turns (once you have squitd some oil down the spark plug holes.... it might still start but im guessing the sump seal and possibly any seals in the carby may have dired a bit and may leak after bening put into service.
Also the thermostat sealmay leak slightly. All depends on how the engine was stored during those 6 years.
