#1 oil pressure warning light?
ANGE Posted on: 2005/10/26 10:01
in my datto with the 12a mazda engine..

i have the standard mazda oil pressure switch hooked up to my oil warning light in my dash...
but it doesnt work...

it worked in the rx7 when i had it...

do u guys think i need to run an a-series oil pressure switch which would be compatible to my oil warning light?

or am i missing something?

In theory it should work how it is...is it hooked up? or is it hooked up properly?

yeah well thats what i thought...

the mazda pressure switch worked in the mazda..

my oil light in my dash worked when i had the a12 in it...

its wired correctly....

but no go.... it doesnt light up when i switch my ignition on...

and i dont plan to run my engine without oil to test it that way

Did the mazda run a light or a guage? I do seem to remember once messing with a rx7's guage.
Datsun requires a light switch.
I would be turning the key to on. Disconnecting the wire from the switch. Earth the wire out and see if the light actually still works. Could be bad globe or wrong wire.

hmmm now that u mention it the rx7 did have an oil pressure guage.... aswell as the light...

im now thinking that the light in the rx7 must be triggered by the guage as there was no seperate pressure sender for the guage...

so the mazda unit musnt be a switch... more an oil pressure sender..

so in theory fitting an a series pressure switch will make the light operate.... anyone know at what pressure does an a series pressure switch actually activate the light??

Hi Ange...

You are right on the money...

Does the A Series oil pump operate at a similar pressure to the 12A rotary one?

I could find out..but I 'd know.

Surely 'at worst', if the light comes on, then you are up for an a-series transplant (to get rid of that chook cooker)

pretty sure most oil pressure switches are in the 15-20 psi range for switch on and as said here they switch to earth so basically grab the end of the plug where it goes to the switch and touch it on the block with the igniton on and if it dont light up then it is most likely the bulb

Any oil pressure switch should work, they just let you know that your oil pressure is dangerously low, I think they come on in the 5-10 lbs range, which is dangerously low, i wish it came on at 20lbs
