#1 Stock A12 Keeps Stalling
Razor Posted on: 2005/12/8 5:48
Hi

I've got a stock A12 in my ute and its idling up and down somewhere around 900 - 1000 RPM while on neutral feels like its going to stall.

Then if I drive it drives fine but stalls slowly when in neutral or slowing down/stopping on 1st gear.

I have to keep my foot on the accelerator to keep a higher rev so it wont stall.

checked timing
adjusted the idle and mixture
checked the fuel level in carby and its spot on the centre.

replaced spark plugs, distributor contacts, rotor

Please advise

thanks

I'd start checking all the vacuum lines for leaks.

I had the exact same problem. There is a wire that comes off the coil and into the carby with a little rubber boot around it. check that, don't ask me what it does exactly but it keeps the engine idling. that wire broke on my a12 and it wouldn't idle, just cut out. facing the engine front on, it's on the left side of the carb right under the spout for the tea pot (air cleaner thingy lol). that should fix it

Thats the anti-diesel solenoid, stops car running on when turning it off. Some carbs dont have them, but if not connected or if faulty will cause the car to not idle or stall etc, because when power is to it (ie. car running) it stays open, but when car switched off or solenoid unplugged or fauly stays shut causing fuel to stop going through idle system of carb. A12 should run smooth at around 6-700 rpm, yes this is most likely problem, otherwise look at vacuum leaks.

My guess is your throttle shaft bushes are flogged causeing an air leak.

I dont think its the anti-dieseling solenoid is the culprit cos it idles if the car is not moving (goes up and down though....)
but as soon as I drive around when I shift gear or slowing down thats the only time it wants to stall, thought it was the fuel level but its not.

can it also be the carby gasket?
where can I buy a carby kit or gasket? supercheap, repco?

Put some chewing gum on the front of the carbie on the throttle shaft bush (opposite side to linkages) and watch your problems dissappear

I'll definitely have a look at that tomorrow
thanks
any more ideas if the throttle shaft bush is in good nick what else should I look for?

Get the carb overhauled if what phunk said is the problem, it costs around $150 to get an overhaul, they chemical clean, rebush the bottom end, shave the top section so it seals and of course new kit throughout. Also you'll find they will put in new idle mix screw, most kits you buy dont come with all the components, i'd leave it up to someone to do it.
