Unleaded type question

hey - i am wondering if the valve guides in a late a15 are hardened, and whether i have to use leaded (or whatever it is called now)?
Cos i read most japanese engines from early to mid 80's have hardened valve guides, and dont require the lead for lubrication - is there another reason why there is lead in juice? Does the type of carby matter( soon Im switching to twin s/d webers woo hoo!)? Also, this new lead substitute, whatever its called, is it as good as unleaded? thanks, Linc.
