opinions on L14 and L14 with twin cam head

Want some opinions on L14's : for vintage I can get away with a L14 with a twin cam head vs A series on the 1200 coupe. Near as I can tell standard L14 is 85HP or so. Twin Cam maybe 100-110HP ?? Anyway how rare are they and what are costs like , remember I'm in the USA.
Thanks Tom

They are very rare and if you can find one very expensive. NZ was lucky to get some left behind by the factory rally team and they were also run on a couple of Fomula Atlantic/Pacific open wheelers. All are accounted for and not for sale....

This is pretty typical , anything for an Atlantic is stupid exspensive.
My other option I could get away with was a Cosworth BDA......another economical model. Guess it's time to get more than 85 HP out of my A12. Tom

Good luck in finding a LZ14. Feral from datrats has been looking for one for years & has only just got a LZ20 head & timing gears recently. they are worth heaps of $$$$$. Same with the BDAs & they are still old school but man do they go & sound grouse. Why cant you use a newer twin cam engine & save a few bucks & time of trying to find one.
Have a look at www.datats.com.au there is more info on LZ engines there then you can shake a stick at Coops.

How much can you modify the internals? If you can source an L13/L14, they could be made to make some good power with the right parts...

nz_datsun_1200 the Fj20 is as heavy as an alloy chev v8 and heavier than mopars latest alloy hemi 2.
Any engine similar in weight would be the go say 90-110kg. For this you wouldnt go past and L16 with the twin cam head from a ka24de or the latest 2zzge from toyota (200hp, cheap and 98kg) or a 90s nissan ga16 with flow improvements and quad mikunis.

Tens and Twenties , the deal on west coast vintage raing is if you can prove a car came or was raced with a given engine back in the day they will allow it or if your car was raced with a particular engine back in the day.....there is a V8 powered MGA locally and it is ok because he has the log book.
I can prove L14's were in 1200's so it woould be OK. Tell me more on power figures for an L14. I know I can get 140HP out of a full race A12 but do not want to rebuild it after every race. Would love to have something with 110HP that will go several seasons. My current A12 (the 85HP wonder) has been in the car since 1990. The car only gets run about 5-6 times a year. Tom

The L14 has a real good rod to stroke ratio. Meaning it has good potential to make torque.

does it have to be twin cam L14 or can you get away with just running a SOHC L14
