A 4 spd for sure... the price of a 5spd is 6 times what youd pay for a 4 spd. Get a 60A 4 spd they are stronger than the 53A 4 spds and stilllike only $50 for a good used one.

Thanks for the advice... anyone know where I can buy a good re-built 60A 4 speed in Sydney?
And I might have a 5 speed for sale very soon...

What kind of gears do you have? I put an OD 60A 5speed in my ute and it's a godsend. Even just around town (we've got lower speed limits than you guys) it's awesome, but that's with a stock ute diff and close to stock height tires (for a ute). Not sure about your setup. My wife's ute kills me with the revs so high.

When I'm doing 100kph or
,er, yeah anyway when I'm traveling at limits I try and just lift my foot off the accelorator about 2mm or something to see if I can still stay on that speed but lower the engine speed. I end up just putting it down again . I wouldn't mind a 5 speed for the coupe though. Does any A series manual gearbox fit onto any A series engine? say standard 56a onto A14 or whatever

im pretty sure any gearbox from a 1200 will go on any A series engine. onyl thing is when going from 4spd to 5spd the speedo wire hits the tunnel. shouldnt be any dramas from 4spd to 4spd.

I'm picking up my 5-speed tomorrow morning and I'm going to think about this one over the weekend and figure out what I want to do... over a few beers I'm thinking.

5-speed fifth is useful at 40mph or higher (on a 1200 at least). It will give you better highway fuel economy and lower engine wear both. The B210s got 47 mpg with this trans, while 1200s with a smaller engine only got 38 mpg. Easier on the ears too.
However, the 63a is heavier, so it'll make your car a bit slower accelerating. So probably not the best for drag racing. You probably couldn't tell the difference on the street. But in-town fuel economy will suffer a bit. The 60- 5-speeds are also heavier, but not as much as the 63- series The gearing will be very different from the 1200's gearbox. You may find you like the spread better, even for low-speed driving (or you may find it worse). The gear ratios are listed in the Tech Section 5-speed overview article. You can view topic.
