Possible dumb question......Are A15's stamped A15

Ok so I got the motor out of the 210 , the engine plate says A15 on the fire wall but..............block is stamped A14. I figuered somewhere in it's life someone put in an A14 or is it simply that the blocks are the same and all A14/15's are stamped A14?? Forgive my possible Do-mass question but hey I've only been playing with A12's for the last 20 years.
Thanks Tom

you are correct, it's an a14 bottom end.
since the difference is the amount of stroke available in the bottom end. my A15 says A15 right next to the engine # , behind the alternator like right where the dipstick is.

Ive got an A15 without a stamp at all. The bit where it usually is is blank and even the little stamp is blank. Definately an A15 though. I measured the stroke.

You occasionally come across A15s restamped as A12s to get around difficulties at registration time.

Did the same thing - bought a Sunny wagon out of the "Trading post" here in oz - turned up at his house in the dark - read the ID plate on the car said A15, took it for a drive felt pretty good. Pulled the motor and took a closer look at the engine number on the engine - was stamped A14. Seller maintains there was no engine change - but when I pulled the head off I measured the stroke it came up 77mm which meant A14.

Quote:
The A14 & A15 blocks are dimentionally interchangeable, but the castings may differ cosmeticly. The engines are stamped with the correct code for what they actually are. The A12 has a different cylinder block as it has a noticeably shorted deck height. All three engines have a different stroke. The manufacturers original tag on the firewall, or inner guard, will have both the chassis number, & full engine number of the engine that was fitted at the factory. If the engine in the car does not have that number, then it has been swaped into the chassis. Always check that the chassis number on the tag matches the number stamped into the car, then compare the engine number on the tag to the one on the engine. Caveat emptor.[buyer beware]

i guess you never know if you have an A14 or A15 till you measure it if someone's fiddled with the engine.
