My mate has just got a Datsun 120Y that has been in a small crash. He said i cud strip it down and take the parts i want. I was just wondering if it wud be worth taking the head off and putting it on my Datsun 1200 coupe? i heard the GX had different valve ports?

Has your mate got an original 120Y GX, or a GX engine in his 120Y?
The GX engine came with factory twin carbs & a special exhaust manifold, & to top it off, the method of geting oil to the rockers was changed when they reviewed the design of the engine for 1974, so a small modification is needed when using the later heads on a 1200 block. If he has a 120Y GX engine, then by all means use the head, complete with the twin carbs & exhaust manifold. You'll love it. Oh yeah, the GX also used a hotter cam, so it might be easier to switch the whole engine into your car.

Quote:
Check the number on the engine against the engine number on the tag in the engine bay. This will tell you if it is the original engine. If it is a genuine JDM GX car then it is quite possibly worth saving as these were special little cars & you did say that ti was only a 'small' crash. See if you can post up a picture of the car & the dash panel with instruments.
