#1 Need help =(
subwoffers Posted on: 2006/7/27 21:12
Hey guys, I really need you help right about now. I was drving home from the mall when all of a sudden 1st 2nd and 3rd developed a loud grinding like it was rubbing on something. The gear box seems to shift fine so i took it home and pushed it around the driveway and i hear a nice loud Grinding sound up front.

Im thinking somethign just went terribly wrong with the tranny.
Any idea what it might be?

Sounds like you had better jack it up, or get it on a chassis hoist so you can access the underside & run it in gears at low speed so you can try to identify the source.
You say that you think the noise is coming from up front, but then you mention the trans, which is sort of in the middle of the car.

What could it be? With the info you have supplied, I have no idea.

What gearbox is in the car? If it is the original 1000 gearbox [56 series] then a 56 series from a 1200 can be used to repair it, or be used as a replacement. With the left drive car's hydraulic clutch system you should not have the same problems fitting it into a 1000 chassis as we do with right drive cars. [clutch arm fouls firewall/ tunnel]

You can also use the 56A trans from the B210 & B310 cars as a replacement, but probably not for the repair of an original 1000 box as some parts are different. They should bolt up the same as a 1200 box as long as it came from behind an A12 engine.
[Did Canadian B210 & B310 models come with A12's?]

If your car has another model of box, & if this proves to be the problem, then you need to identify it, then I think that straight replacement will be more economical than repair.

Let us know what you find when you jack it up.

Hey guys, i took you advice and put it up on stands and chcked it out while running. I noticed that 1 gear noise is less, 2nd i hear that same grind again, it sounds and feels like its catching 2nd than missing, catching, missing. When it was in 2nd i put the clutch in and felt something thou the shifter, like somethign was still spinning and moveing the shifter alittle. Something els i have noticed is there is less resistance when putting the car in to reverse,( putting sifter all the way to right and down". I remeber there was abit of tension pushing it to the rigt before this happend.

Any input is deeply appreciated
I took a short vid of this with my digi cam, i hope this helps.

Could it be possible that you have stripped the mainshaft? If you can get another box for not too much i would replace it. that box sounds stuffed.

The problem is there is no such thing as finding a replacment for cheap where im. Canada Bc, Richmond. Trannys are scarce. If a stuffed tranny is the case, what trannys can be swaped into this A15, the engine before was an A10

i had a prob like that with my celica box. the problem was it was out of oil. check the oil in it and top it up then take it for a rap around the block. see if that work. i hope this will help you.

To repeat myself from my first post.

What gearbox is in it now?

The 1200 gearbox can be used to replace or repair an original 1000 one. Both are 56 series gearboxes.

The 56A gearbox from A12 powered B210 & B310 models can also be used as replacements. Some of the internals are different from the earlier 56 box, so these may not be suitable as a parts source for the earlier model.
Any of these will be ok behind an A15 as long as you don't abuse it.

Cars that came with A14 & A15 engines usually used a 60 series gearbox. If this is what you have now, then a replacement shouldn't be too hard to source.

If the fitting of a 60 series gearbox is an upgrade on the existing box, then you will need to fabricate a new rear gearbox crossmember as it is located further back than the original & you may need to adjust the tunnel shape.
Many of these in North America came as an overdrive five speed in either dogleg or regular shift pattern. The existing tailshaft would still be useable with either of these gearboxes.
These will take more punishment, but are not bulletproof.

The 63 series box can be found in some North American B210 models, & to fit one will take some tunnel work as they are the biggest, strongest & heaviest of the factory gearboxes for the A series engine, & for most people, completely un-necessary.

Hi subwoffers,

I had the same thing happen to me. Sounds like 2nd gear is catching, going out of gear, catching. I broke two gearboxes this way.

The stock Datsun 1000/1200 4-speed is not strong enough to last behind an A15. For an A15-powered car, do what Datsun did: use the stronger A14 gearbox from a 75-78 B210 or 79-82 B310. You can use either a 4-speed or 5-speed. They are common at the wreckers down here in Seattle. If you need help getting one, let me know.

it sounds like a carrier bearing has collaped. stirp your box and if your lucky it may not of damaged the gears if this is the case new bearings will sort it out
