#1 gearbox part compatability
cheater_5 Posted on: 2006/9/28 8:42
Hey guys.
I have the chance to get a very cheap dogleg 60 series 5 speed.
EXcept the casing was wasted and welded on crooked or some crap.
Long story short...case = poo,, gears etc = sexy
and here is my question,
Will the gears and all that fit the standey 1200 56 box casing? or a 4 speed 60 series box casing?
Is there anything they will fit?

Cheers
Chris

Which part of it is sh1t?
The bellhousing/front half may be interchangeable with a 60series four speed from a C20. If it's the rear section, I don't know. The selctor part may require the 5spd bit.

The gearbox case for the 56 series gearboxes are interchangeable with each other [3 speed, four speed, four speed close ratio option-one & ultra close ratio option-two]

Additionally, the 56A gearbox cases are also interchangeable with each other. [four speed, five speed & five speed option-one]

With this in mind, it would stand to reason that the gearbox case from the 60 series would very likely also be interchangeable with each other. The main difference with the basic layout of these small Datsun gearboxes was in the number of gears that went into the extention housings

3 speed= all gears inside the case
4 speed= reverse in the extention housing
5 speed= first & reverse in the extention housing [F5W56A] I don't know which gear is out there in the 60 series overdrive models, but it's either first or fifth.

This means that the extention housing is different for each one & I wouldn't be surprised if they were different between the 60 series dogleg & regular shift versions too.

ooo yup. bugga.
Can you get dogleg 4 speed 60's ?
If so do you think that itd fit that or would only reverse be in the extension housing ?
I REALLY hope that there is something else that can fit the gearing of this box.

Dogleg four speed? Which forward gear would be off to the side?

In a dogleg box, first gear selection is off to the left & back. This then becomes a 'takeoff' gear with the remaining four gears grouped together in a standard 'H' pattern for nice slick gearchanging. It's the position of first gear in the shift pattern that gives these boxes their nickname, & there are no dogleg four speed gearboxes.
