Due to height restrictions the L series is not such a good idea

I have a junker 1000 Coupe at home and a L20 with a 5speed I am thinking of fitting to it...
Nothing is impossible, wait over the front wheels might be a bit painful (eg brakes etc). Have a go be the one to tell everyone else how its done Or better still start a thread here showing everyone how your doing it and what obsticles you find along the way... I asume no one here has done it...???

Cant be done for road use because they are way to tall.If however you are trying to build a sports sedan for competition that is a different story, then you can poke it thru the fire wall, get it sitting behind the crossmember, drysump the thing and hang the wiper motor of the roof, because you will only have minimal space between the plenum and rocker cover. What you now have is near as possible to 50/50 weight distribution, yes i just described my first Sports Sedan and if any one knows where it resides these days i would give my eye teeth to know.It was sold to South Australia in the late 1970's Cheers Bert

I roughly measured between the top of the cross member and the underside of the bonnet (hey I did say rough) and was suprised. The 1000 appeared to have about 25 to 50mm less height than the 1200. I figured if that room was needed, then a small spacer could be inserted between the cross member and the chassis rails. And we all know that L20's fit into 1200's thanks to members like R-Fast. PS, the L16 is a bit shorter than the L20 as well. I'm pretty sure it can be done. I'm predicting the engine mounts will be a bit tricky though !!

My L16 clears the 1200 bonnet by about 35mm, the L20 is about 15-20mm taller than the L16 or L18. I didnt notch my crossmember either.

I finally got round to running a tape measure over an L-series engine. It was a bitsa engine in a 180B SSS. I measured just under 600mm from the top of the cross member to the top of the oil cap. This places is about 100mm through the top of a 1000 bonnet.
Hmmm....Whitesedan, you didn't notch your cross member ?? Do 1200's have cross members that are sunk in the middle ?? I recall someone, maybe L18-B110, saying they used a Stanza cross member in the conversion. I'll have to have a look at my bros 1200 to see whats going on. Its impossible to modifiy or swap a 1000 cross member with another model on account of the transverse spring. If this is all true, then an L-series 1000 is out of the question. You can view topic.
