The CA is slightly smaller and engine mounts , crossmembers etc are more readily available.

+ CA18DET = Legal.
You can only go SR20 in N/A format legally.

i know of an FJ20 turbo engineered ute in NSW. I think it has to do with Tare weight or something. Anyway SR20 much cheaper and easier to get performance parts for.
If your going unmodified I would go CA18DET easier and cheaper regarding ready made mountings and cross members etc. if your going to modify engine talk to an engineer first and go a SR20DET

Talking of weight, does anyone know the exact weight of a 1200 ute. Heard heaps of figures but does anyone know the official figure?

SR20 would be more expensive to buy but cheaper to get good power out of. Also no fitting kits that I know of compared to CA18 kits.

I think SR20 is still legal in ACT also?

do a search I asked the same question a while ago.
The SR is harder to fit (i Know I have done it) no point going for the CA as they are old tech compared to the SR the SR is all alloy so more efficiant on the scale of things and even in the NA form (that I have) have to much power to make the car tractable foot has to be off the loud pedel all together to change gear so there is no wheel spin.

In NSW i have been told the Ute is the only 1200 you can engineer a 2L turbo as it can be registered for commercial use under a buisness name. All other 1200's it would be 2L Non turbo or the famous CA18T.
I personally would much rather go the 2L over CA18 anyday L20T/FJ20T/SR20T all very nice engines and rip rip.
