How long is a piece of string??
It depends on many things. How good the tune is what condition the engine is ect ect.
I would say with a good condition stock engine and tune 15psi should be fine anymore the stocko pistons will probably fail might last for a little while with more boost but again it really is the luck of the draw.

most tune shops will say 1 bar but i hear a lot of backyard drifters say 12 psi or 14 psi is ok

The word you are probably looking for is efficient. This is true, it does depend on the turbo not just the reading on your boost guage.

To attempt to run 14psi with the stock turbo to redline would be pushing the compressor right out of it's efficiency range. This means you get increases in inlet air temps and less power compared to a larger turbo pumping that much pressure at a cooler temperature.

I think there are a bunch of good technical articles on turbocharging at the Garrett website that could help yoy in knowing as much as you can.

I remember ca18det_man pointing them out when he bought his new turbo.
