#1 HELP - Cant get the CA18DET to go.
old_school Posted on: 2008/4/6 11:59
Been working on this problem for 3 weekends now and still cant get the CA to fire.

Turns over and intermitently will fire on one of the cylinders but cant get it to run. I have heaps of spark, heaps of fuel pressure to injector rail and I get a whistling of air into the intake as it turns over.

Running the standard ECU.

Checked the resistance of things like air flow crank angle etc as per the service manual.

Before I got to this point I found a short in the resistor for the injectors (Metal filings), so thinking at the moment computer may have sustained damage?

Red and Green LED are on on the computer the whole time when key turned to ON and while cranking. Is this correct?

Do have the cranking signal from key accross to ECU and power on all required inputs.

Ideas appreciated ... Cheers

Also I have a Haynes type manual on EFI computers etc. It talks about the CA20 computer and the red / green leds on the side. And how you select fault mode and you can recall ECU faults by a series of flashes on the red LED. Cound flashes and then look at what it means in the book.

Can anyone confirm if the CA18 factory ECU software would be compariable to the CA20?

Or if anyone has instructions specifically for the CA18 computer.

Thanks

If you can check that would be great.

Does not appear to have any vac leaks, all vac lines are correct and all hoses have been replaced. Think I still have electrical gremlim :(

Purchased the CA as a half cut and was running when picked it up. The shop had cloth obstructing air intake into air flow meter and using a windscreen washer pump to supply fuel. I assumed that the obstruction in air was because of the very low fuel pressure.

Assume it is correct ECU but ordered a 2nd hand unit today to try. Current line of thought is I damaged ECU. I will check it is a manual ECU thanks Matty.

Engine has sat for 3 years and have turned it over every few months, with a shot of oil down into combustion chamber.

Sounds like it is starving for fuel when trying to start. Fuel pump starts and then stops after 10 seconds or so. So temp wired fuel pump to run continuously and done fuel delivery test. The plugs are wet with fuel. Plus have heaps of spark. Timing on Crank angle sensor has not been changed.

Cheers Jarrad

Are the plugs fouled?
How did you get all the oil out of the engine after you squirted some down the bores every month or so? Could still be trying to run on oil and also fouled your plugs!

Should clarify that it only got a squirt of oil from the oil can every 12 - 18 months and turned over by hand every 1-3 months.

The plugs are the original units and are wet with fuel but not fouled with oil or carbon build up. You can wipe the fuel residue of the plugs and it is clear not a black liquid.

With the plug pulled out and held against the block its a strong spark, I do have a new set of plugs but holding off on putting them in due to the small amount of oil in combustion chamber. But will probally try them next.
