#1 Electronic Ignition Wiring Question
McD Posted on: 2008/4/15 3:08
Nissan engine A15 with the electronic dizzy with the black box attached. Going into a non nissan application. Hows the wiring go??

Going off what I see in thispic (presuming) that the ignition 12v hot (+) will go to the dizzy, then from the dizzy to the hot side of the coil.

Please some one correct me if I'm wrong.

On another note which Terminal is which on the distributor??

Looking at the diagram you are correct. Ignition switched power goes to the dizzy black wire with a white stripe then to the to the coil positive. The blue wire from the dizzy connects to the negitive side of the coil.

so does the coil ground through the dizzy?? As the diagram also shows a ground on a direct hot line which would cook the wiring..

Yes the coil grounds threw the dizzy. The part in the diagram that you are seeing with the + going to ground is the condensor wired in. The condensor connects to the hot lead on one side and ground on the other.

Exactly right:

1. The two wires on the distributor go to + and - terminals of the coil
2. remove the old coil, replace with 12V coil
3. bypass the ballast resistor.
4. Add a (required) condensor on the hot side
5. Add an (optional) tachometer to the negative side. NOTE: Factory tachos don't use this line

McD, which state are you in?

Thanks makes more sense now

I'm in Maine

What size condenser by the way??

I don't know how condensors are measured. You could just go to wreckers and get one from a 1978-1983 type Datsun (any kind). Oh, probably not any in Maine though. Maybe one from any other car.

Well from the wiring diagram it appears you may not need one. They show one for the alternator, but not one for the distributor.

About the only datsuns you find left up here are the old 280z and 300z.

Now how do you tell which terminal is which on the distributor??

They are measured in uf (micro farad). A condensor from the old 280z should work fine the values on most of them are pretty close if not the same. You could also buy one new from your local auto parts store. They are normally in stock for most vehicles.

if you put them on the wrong way you won't get any spark... so just try if there are no markings.

i've been running a JTS high energy coil with elec dizzy for some time now and at no stage have i run a condenser on the coil. i have one on the alternator i believe
