#1 Need some advice (building 1200 ute).

hey guys,
im new to all this i only no very little, i brought a datsun ute about 2 years ago and just starting it now becuase i have money,
now i was looking a the sr20det converstion,
or the ca18det converstion,
now this is the the advice i need,
i have a datsun L20 motor lined up if i want it its for 2 grand., ok heres its spec's

its a speedway motor with only 400km on the motor,i was thinking speedway 7000rpm all the time mmmmm but.

motor:L20-supercharged
carb:500 holley
Cam:waggot 525
vernier timing set
valves out of a 280z,
ports matched and polished
block:bored,decked,dedagged,o,ringed.
pistons:mazda turbo ceramic and teflon coated, also balanced.
sump is modified and baffelle,
toyota AE supercharger,


dynoed at,
HP:254.52hp.
Torgue:222.78.
fuel flow:12.4.
Boost:9.5lb

what u guys reckon i should do i would love the support thanks shaun.

Buying somebodies old race engine can be a problem. I once bought an A15 race engine that all i could salvage in the end was the cam & the heads. The crank was cracked, the block was bored to 80mm, the pistons were cast Holden that had been turned down, etc. That doesn't mean the L20 is shot, but it'd be something i'd keep in mind.Maybe grab it & get a stock L20B bottom end, rebuild it & put all the accessories onto it.
235 hp & 222 ft/lb of torque would be brutal in a 1200 ute, you'll easily be challenging the bikes up the old highway to Grafton.
You'd have to fabricate the engine mounts on the crossmember itself, as theres nothing that'll bolt in straight up. You'd probably have to get an R30 5 speed, which will mean cutting the transmission tunnel, & probably the stock diff wont last. These 2 would be the same with the CA18 or the SR20.
Brakes have been discussed a lot on the site, so a search through the past posts should give you some ideas.
Before all this occurs, however, have you been to an engineer & talked it over with him. The attitude of the engineer is what's going to tell you what you can do. I know of an engineer in Wollongong who has no troubles with 2 litre turbos, but a friend who tried an A15 with turbo into his ute a few years back was restricted to 1500 cc's, couldn't even be an overbore. All depends on the engineer.

People have to remember that an engineer's certificate doesn't mean anything. If you get pulled over by a cop he can still request a inspection on your car even though you have an engineers cert. You can still get defected if they think something is wrong. The RTA or QLD transport or whatever it is in the other states will always have the last laugh.

MMMM i like the sound of the L20. main reason is because its different! power to weight would be crazy, as mentioned you will need to ballance this power with a good box, diff and brakes. So you will need to allow for that.
The CA18 would be the best/easiest with engineers and very impressive motor too. the other thing is its a popular conversion so all the homework has been done. you can even get 1200/ CA conversion kits.
