importing my Datsun 1200 GX to Australia

Hi
It appears there is no problem getting federal import permission, but New South Wales appear to require emissions control, my Datsun is completely original 1975 only 102 000 km, i.e. has no emissions control - will I have to modify it in NSW to register it, and what will it cost? Are there any other requirements besides emissions in NSW? any info will be appreciated. JCO

Besides all of the paper work crap you shouldn't have to do anything at all to get it registered. Not sure if that is the same in NSW but down south our rules are a bit more strict than yours. hope this helps.

Where are you from mate? I have been struggeling to get my ute on the road because it does have to comply with the emissions controls, its an 85 and had Dellortoes.
My guess is that it will only have to comply with the Australian Design Rules that apply to that year model. you should be able to read up on all of this on the rta website but I couldnt find the section I was looking for (have found it before however). EDIT: If the car is standard it should comply but if any modifications have been made then the modifications will have to meet the relevant ADR's that are applicable to your year model. good luck...

august 1974 emmissions rules became sticter in AUS and chances are your 1200 gx may not meet them.
Was mainly little things like pcv valves etc. Shouldnt be too hard as long as car is standard or close to. It would be a personal import so look at inofrmation on DOTARS web site DOTARS

Good work unfamilia, thats what I was reading and why I couldnt find it... I was looking in the wrong place...
I'm fairly sure that the only emissions ADR is No. 27 (from the second edition of the ADR's) and my compliance plate from my old 76 ute (still got the plate at home) did not have a No. 27 so did not need to comply with any emissions controls. But as unfamilia said it may need a PCV or Carbon Canister these may be under another number on the compliance plate but I dont think so... I will have a quick look when I get home... To be sure you will need to find another 71 model and get a copy of the ADR's that are on the compliance plate, these will apply to your car, you can download all of the second edition ADR's from the DOTARS website (you have to pay for the new ones). I also think that the RTA keep records of what ADR's apply to all vehicles.

it may be a large hassle...ive looked into importing a boat and the cost is over the top. best speak to a customs import broker..things like quarantine rules will affect you most. they like the cars to be spotless and fumigated and if thats not adhered to properly, they will do it themselves at your cost..not only that they like to pressure wash your dash and engine filling your engine up with water and seizing it. ive heard many horror stories. Id also love to import a GX one day so this will be an interesting exercise for both of us

thanx guys for all the info. I live in SA, will move to Au next year. My Datsun was bought new in 1975, in SA. Its a 1200 GX Coupe. Its completely original and spotless even with original hubcaps the works, has never had anything done on it, except myself changing oil, plugs and filters and once or twice I replaced the brake fluid and coolent. Oh I replaced the gearbox and div oil at 50 000 and 100 000 km as well. It now has 102 000 km on it. Colour is blue.

My Dad has taken his R1 in and out of Australia from the Uk quite a few times now and its not all that scary, he's never had water sprayed anywhere near it, they do fumigate the box though. The only problem he has had is a fork from the forklift pierce the box and squash his toolbox with his plastering tools in. He imports all through a broker which makes it pretty stress free (although I've seen my Dads face when they called him about the forklift incident, now thats stress), I would contact an Import Broker in NSW as they will be able to fill you in on what do to.

A mate of mine imports thumpsters from china and they have gone over the import rules and are very stringent on all imports, it has to do with the chinese importing stuff world wide with high level of lead in paint. You would have to find out off an import agent i'm not sure if that would apply to your circumstance? you would have to go through and comply with all our strict quarintine laws as converted previously stated.
You shouldn't have a problem getting the car registered when and if you actually get it over here, cars made before before 84-85 that aren't manufactured with emissions controls should pass blue slip, my datsun 1000 passed blue slip i asked the guy who did the blue slip and he said that it'll be fine as long as it's not modified. but i spose it depends on who you talk to and if they go by the book.
