ca18det using LPG?

I've been thinking that with the high petrol prices it makes sense to choose a different fuel.
Has anyone done this conversion? I've heard of a few gas turbo cars so it must be possible. You occasionally hear of taxi's blowing up their airboxes but with a turbo that would be disastrous. Hmm.. gas injection? Next we should be using natural gas for fuel, there's bucket loads of it. Good for running high boost too. justin

A guy with the username "sl33pe" on here has a white 1200 Sedan running a CA18DET on LPG. Asking him would probably give you some useful info.
The 1200 is at the start of this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEbfKpu2y18

Great, so you guys have already done it or are about to.
I guess the largest expense would be buying an aftermarket computer? What about just re-mapping the existing chip (e-prom) on the CA computer? The timing would have to be changed. What equipment is needed?

You will need a 4 cyl gas injector block. The gas converters used for most of the injected setups output gas at 15psi, you would have to have this manifold referanced so the presure always remains 15psi higher than map.
I had trouble getting the components years ago and had to make my own converter but it all should be available now. I used a M4 motec but any of the aftermarket ecu`s should be ok. haltec do one especialy for gas aparently. Ive had no experience with modding factory ecu`s but i dont like your chances. Laney, what components have you chosen? R you going to use gas vapour injectors or liquid?

If you don't want to go to all the expense of injected LPG with a computer you have other options.
I made my Cordia turbo run on gas(it would pull 210kph on gas comfortably) and I put a supercharged 4AGZE into a corolla on straight gas both using the same mixer I took from car to car. The mixer is the venturi ring type I think it came out of a V8 or big 6. I got it from a wreckers. I just stuck it in the duct work immediately after the airfilter where the duct is largest and put a highflow converter on to feed it. It worked a charm. In both cases the more the supercharger or turbo 'sucked' didn't matter the correct mixture was being governed by the venturi. Simple and effective. I even ran an intercooler on the supercharged motor. I should dig up the old pics.

Thanks guys, i think after digesting all the great info that gas injection is too expensive at this stage.
Tosser, your setup sounds really simple and quite a bit cheaper even if it may not be quite as efficient/powerful as the injection set ups.. I would love to see pics of your set up on the cordia - it would help me to set mine up. Did you have to modify timing/spark with a piggyback computer?

I will have to have a look. These projects were done over 10 years ago now so they will be print photos I will have to scan. There is nothing really to see with the Cordia set-up. The only way you can tell it is on gas is the converter which I tucked away neatly. I will see what pics I have.
