I believe that engines do this if they are running too hot.

Ignition timing,anti-knock sensor(if it has one),faulty ignition switch.

yeah my A15 does this 2.... just keeps spluttering and wont shut down so i just pull the handbreak on and put it in gear and drop the clutch and stall it.... i was told it was detonation cus of engine heat plus a combination of carby tuning and timing... bring on the SR.

Does your carb have a solenoid on it? if so this is the anti-diesel solenoid.
This will stop it running on if it is there and working, it was an upgrade on the later model datsun carbs to allow leaner mix without the run-on.

ah ok... no im running twin SU hitachis.... im soon to be pulling it all out and doing an SR conversion so the EFI will save me from the embarrassment of not being able to shut my car off at servos and the shops
