Modern cars have a swirl pot in the tank. Datsuns have some large baffles but don't help when cornering hard. Remember that carby engines have a float bowl. Efi systems must keep fuel between the pump and the injectors to maintain fuel pressure.

VWs have a surge tank/swirl pot under the bonnet. It's a nice size.

The VW might work, so long as it uses EFI diameter hose fittings.
I think that a lot of surge tanks are a bit big, we've discussed this in detail here many times, you might be able to find more if you search. When you are up on high boost, and you get a lean out ..you can break things pretty quickly. Definitely need either an intank swirl pot or external surgetank if you retrofit EFI to an old carby car.

The car will work fine without one for testing purposes.
Just if you you are going to race in any form, then having guaranteed fuel in the lines without air, is the key to reliability. Although I suspect using cheap hoseclamps and having a surge tank may have caused some trouble too. You can view topic.
