#1 What to replace the 1200 with
BigV Posted on: 2009/4/16 13:37
Have been starting to get the idea I would like a new version of my 1200
Dare I say it being over 6foot and driving a 1200 is getting a bit of a chore for everyday driving and it has become a weekend drive only and my upgrade so far is a Sunny coupe
Here is the Question
What can I build sub 1000kg that is as fun to drive as the 1200 but easyer to live with as the sunny is not quite enough

strip out a R32 skyline or sylvia or 180sx.... these are all fun cars and can be made reasonably light and they are in the datsun/nissan family. my personal choice would be a 91 model navara king kab ute with sr20det conversion but thats over 1000kgs.

Only thought I had so far is old six cylinder datto with a four cylinder engine fitted etc Eg the old skyline model after the 240k with a nice strong CA or SR but thats probably not much of an improvement on the Sunny with the same mods

Ther was a R29 (posably?) pre R30 import anyway's at my local mechanic with an RB20dett and that thing flew as it was a whole lot of motor for a reasonably small/light car and it was comfy as to sit in..

There is nothing sub-100kg that is as fun as a 1200, yet roomier.

Keep dreaming.

well not in rear wheel drive any way. closest would have to be mx5/miata but still a struggle for 6 foot plus peiople.

r32 gts t's are going cheaper than 180sx and silvias still. good bang for the $$$.

If you want datsun still, 260z but more realistically 280z would be achiveable, or stanza/180b but they would be near or over the 1000kg.

Mazduh rx3/capella but $$$$ as all the rotor heads want them.

I reckon 180b or 240k coupe. Those look sex.
I'd go 240k coupe with an sr. That would give you the most room but I doubt even with a 4 cyl it would get down under 1000kg. Would still be cool though. Plus IRS would be nice on a daily.

here's an idea... take a working holiday in the UK for 12 months. By a lotus elise... series 1 versions from the late 90's - early 2000's sell for around 7000 pounds (sometimes you find them for as low as 4000 pounds).

At the current exchange rate, you get them for around 14.5k AUD. Bring it back as a personal import
When the rover engine dies, slam in whatever nissan motor you want.

You may also be able to do the same thing by taking a working holiday in Japan, although I have no idea what they cost there.

is it leg or height room that's the issue? in my ute i've got some sweet sparco buckets that sit pretty dam close to the floor and i've got heaps of headroom. i'm about 189cm (6'3ish i think) but my legs are long in comparison to my body. anyone under 6'4 would fit easily though i would think. seats are so nice to sit in as well, surprisingly comfy.
