Bent shifter fork (internal part).

Thanks.

Is this an easy repair or a tranny shop only deal?

I would not say easy. Depends on how careful, and patient you are, and how well you pay attention to details. You will need the factory service manual (1977 or 1978 B210). Examine it at the regional library and if it doesn't scare you, dig in.

I am only guessing at the cause. Maybe someone else have different idea.

Sounds like the selector finger is bent. It is not unusual for someone who has recently resealed a nissan box and tried to get out the cotter pin that retains the finger to replace the O ring from the shifter sleeve. They usually try to heat up the finger to get the pin out and weaken the finger so that when you do a hard shift, the finger bends and you lose either all the top gears or all the botttom gears. When you are really unlucky you lose all but one gear. Then you are stuck.

Thanks much for your help.
The manual refers to something called a "striking lever" that is held by a lock pin on the "striking rod" in the rear extension assembly...
perhaps this is it

You could sell the gearbox to a woman my dad knows. We have double demerit points on long weekends. So this woman decided to drive a 50 kms return trip in 2nd gear so she wouldn't get a speeding fine. Otherwise I am not much help with a solution to your problem.

Salutations B2Slow:
I would say revhead001 is on the right track; especicially if 1, 3, &5th work. If you are confident in your abilities; you can remove the rear extension housing and inspect/repair yourself as your problem almost certainly lies there.
If you are not confident, an experienced transmission tech could more then likely identify and repair your tranny in 10 mins with the rear housing off. You could certainly get a quote for an inspection. Damage to syncros or gears need not be expected for this gripe. Let us know what the cause was ,when you find out.

actually, I might have a spare striker finger for one of these boxes.
I think it's going to be too hard to fix. You should just give it to me. Mine is getting a bit crunchy, and I could use a spare. lol
