just a quick query - since I haven't got one to look at - do the bw diffs on later datsuns have tapered roller outer axle bearings or the ball bearings like the h series diffs? Secondly, do they all run the same handbrake cable setup as early 1200s the 'floating' cable bracket at the back of the diff etc??
Reason I ask is I've got a couple of ute diffs, and plan to put one in sooner or later, but if the bw diffs have tapered bearings, I'm semi-curious to see if I could adapt them or something - make a hybrid diff (I prefer a tapered roller bearing in general, but I also like the idea of being able to pull the axle out by itself to pull the diff centre out, not having to disconnect the handbrake and brake lines.

Pretty much all the datsuns run roller bearings too. The BW68 from the 120Y and bluebirds and stanza all run roller bearing axles just in different sizes. Only the Id of the bearing is common.

DD I'm aware the bw diffs have no removale centre - I was actually looking at making a hybrid, using the outer ends of the axle tubes of the bw diffs if they ran tapered roller bearings, trying to basically have a way to get easily removable axles on the rear end. I know I could always just 'man up' and put up with disconnecting the handbrake and brake hardlines!! :) - just one of those thinking out loud things, wondering about tbe bw diff axle bearings etc.
The reason it came up at all was that I got my coupe registered in my name recently, and as part of the roadworthy it needed axle bearings/seals and rear wheel cylinders etc. After taking them all apart (and I honestly think that smashing the ball bearing outer shell off with the right application of force, then pulling the brake backing plate off, and then getting the bearing inner hub and locking sleeve off is easier than trying to press them off with the brake backing place in situ is the go if the bearings need replacing) - although it didn't take centuries to do it, I kind of missed the convenience most other drum brake rear cars have in that the axles can pop out by themselves with the removal of the 4 retaining bolts/nuts.

I know of a few blokes that have just made up a new stepped retainer and machined the drum backing plate out so you can get the axle out for quicker access for a ratio swap.
