#1 It went 'BANG' & then stopped

Took the (Silver) Sunny coupe (I'm alliterate)to Wakefield yesterday & had a mixed day.In the end we suffered from old tyres (took 1 1/2 laps to warmup), a serious fuel leak (brake fitting sliced a fuel line) then the gearbox went bang & no more drive. Other than this we spun wheels, locked up brakes & slid the tail round. All this with only about 90 HP from a stock L18 with webers & extractors. The shift points are 5500 rpm 3rd to 4th,& 5000 rpm 4th to 5th,except at the Dogleg at Oran Park where we pull 5th at 4000 rpm because we would be changing in the middle of the corner. We'll probably get an R30 box for it, & definitely a bigger cam (Factory 74 degree grind). We're due back at Wakefield on July 5th, so I better get on with it.

...wonder what the cause of your gearbox death was?

Sounds like it got real hot?

Tough break though

More likely operator error. Been a bit Hamfisted at times, & this'll break anything. Hopefully somebody has a stumpy box spare somewhere.

Have had a couple of people look at this box & the conclusion is the spline inside the join ofthe input shaft & the mainshaft has broken. Not worried as I sourced an R30 5 speed for it, at about the same time I lost my job. Should be a simple bolt in, as it looks to be the same length as the Stanza box with the same spline on the output shaft, so I should be able to use the existing gearbox crossmember & the tailshaft. Also got a series 3 B/bird 5 speed & SR20 front half, plus a cash adjustment, for the SR20DE box I had.
