elemental_funk Posted on: 2009/11/2 4:43
Does anyone know the weight of a 12a rotary engine? I have heard many times about its small size and light weight, but i cant find what it actually weighs! Any ideas? Thanks

i dont know how much they weigh (id be intersted to know aswell), but im guessing about the same as an a12.
gearbox is a different story though, mazda box probably weighs at least double that of the datto 4spd.

my ute was 40kg heavier all up post conversion.

Found on a rota site

mazda 12a rotary with transmission, flywheel, clutch, starter, intake, carb, alternator, coil packs, all required wiring, homemade exhaust header, as pulled from a running car (eg, I could have started the motor on the scales if I hooked up 12V) was 375lbs.

cool thanks guys thats exactly the kind of info i was after, and 40kg heavier is not much for the power bump if you had one of these. At least if the extra weight was in the tranny its positioned where it can give some good balance

well a c18det should eat a standard 12a rotary.. if it was 12a pp or 12a turbo the rotary would smash the ca18det. as for how it handles. depends how you do the convertion.

Yes, a modded CA18DET beats a stone-stock 12A rotary.

But the 12A is lighter
CA18DET - engine alone: 282 pounds
CA18DET 5-speed: 85 pounds:

CA18DET w/o all acc. but with gearbox: 367 pounds
12A, all acc. & gearbox: 375 pounds, all the weight down low
add an alternator to the CA and that's 377 pounds...some of the weight up high, and more forward too

Look like the 12A beats CA18DET for weight!
