Sounds like timing to me, but I'm not too good with tuning motors.

I would def check the timing. Has the dizzy been out of the engine? If so, has it been set correctly. one tooth out is enough to throw out your tuning.
If it is an ex turbo motor, maybe the dizzy has been fixed or recurved and now is outa wack for a NA engine.

it come with a electronic dissy and i put it in i did the usual thing, put it on tdc and the rotor was at number 1 etc. i can rev the engine a little bit but it coughs under load when i rev it, i have put a timing light on it and the timing is around about right but i can't get the car to run long enough to get it spot on. could it be anything else? just trying to eliminate the possible problems.
Edit: not sure about the dissy, he never had it running on the turbo motor he reakons, he had a normal points dissy

Leads on the correct plugs? I stuffed up on 2 and 3 once - took me a week to work it out.

Coughing out the carby is someties too advanced timing. Try retarding the timing, turn the distributor opposite the direction the vacuum advance is pointing.
Or an intake valve could be stuck open. Pull the rocker cover and adjust the valves. If one is very loose, it may be stuck. If one is tight, it probably is not closing all the way. You can view topic.
