so i bought a used a14 i knew id be rebuilding. they told me it was pulled from a running car and had been in doors for the all the 4 years they had it. when i picked it up it looked ok just some surface rust but it had seized, so they sold it to me as a core and i went on my way. anyways i tool off the manifolds and the intake ports are filled with white and orange flakes; mostly white. is this aluminum oxide? is there anything i can do to prevent this from coming back?

also i havent taken the head off yet because ive got some marvel mystery oil soaking

id would say that the flakes are possibly just evaporated residue. If the area where the flakes are found are not pitted in any way, then its probally not rust. when the ususal tap water is put into the engine, and then left for a while, the water can evaportae leaving behind the disolved minerals, hence the brown and white flakes.

The brown is probally iron and the white, calcium.

Clean it out, look for pitting, and if all clear, go from there.

need pics dude. u have to be weary about engines that may have had water in them. u can get rusted bores, stuck rings which may score the bore or even brake.and u dont want flakes of metal or debre entering the cylinders. hopefully being a datto motor she be tough :P

yea sorry, i know some pictures would be nice but i lost the usb cord for my digi. its definitely calcium, lime or something, that made its way into the back 2 cylinders and seriously gunked them up. fortunately it doesnt seem to have eaten away at the walls at all. i filled them up with CLR a few hours ago, has anyone cleaned an engine with this stuff? i could literally watch it dissolve the mess on the top of the block

noone has used clr? seems like a horrible mistake but there was a pretty good chance it would never run again anyways
