#1 Installing Door Belts - Im Confused :S
HamzaLH Posted on: 2010/7/16 12:49
I ordered some door belts for the 1k a few weeks ago (finally got them 4 weeks later) ... But im confused ... They are labelled on the website and packing as the felt one being inside and rubber one outside ... Now to me that makes sense, all the cars i have seen have it this way (rubber out and felt in) ... So here they are ...

This is how they're labelled

However the door has me confused ... There is only a small shallow channel on the outside and a deeper channel on the inside with clips ...

Am i wrong in assuming the felt goes on the inside? Or is my door messed up?

Not only that they're different lengths ... are they meant to be cut to size?

I hope someone can shed some light here ...

Felt on inside.

The longer piece needs to be cut down, after you fit it (or fit, mark-it, remove it cut it, fit it again).

It will fit in the outside channel but it takes time and care. From memory I think I opened the slot/channel slightly with a flat screwdriver (careful not to crack the paint with the hard edges of the blade - put a piece of cloth over the end) and pressed the rubber in. You may need to use something hard to press the rubber down into the channel from above. I think I even sprayed some CRC or WD40 down the channel to help lubricate it as I put it in.

Whatever you do don't pull it tight so that it thins out, thin enough to fit into the channel. Once you do that and cut it to length you'll find the piece will slowly move/shrink back to a shorter length leaving a gap.

At the end that you cut there will need to be a little overlap extra of the piece to overlap past the little quarter window component.

Either way the piece/profile could certainly do with a slight improvement.

I think the outer you have been sold is no where near the profile of a 1000
I know this because I went out to Scots Old Auto rubbers in person and he tried to sell me the same sort.
Has it got steel strip in it and look 3 times the depth it should be Hamza?
If so this is more than likely a seal for a 1600, and should probably not be attempted to fit.
I cant remember what I ended up getting, it was the closest profile I could find, still not perfect and I havent tried to fit it yet so sorry I cant be much help there.

#OOPS# I just look at that picture properly, they have metal in there??

The one I got was without a metal spine, it was very flexible and difficult to press down. Who did you buy from? Mine were rarespares parts, and it had a different profile to the stock one slightly bigger but nothing like what you have there. I think I have some spares somewhere if you need a part number or pic.

Sorry about that, hopefully you didn't try to fit it! And thanks to Scully for spotting that.

Yeah it does have a metal strip through the middle ... And it sure does look 3 times the length ... Thats what confused me because the inside requires a strip that deep, not the outside ...

I was sure the felt goes on the inside, but the clips are too deep for the felt strip ...

I ordered them from rarespares

I think they're both wrong ... :S

That sucks Hamza.
Funny that Rare Spares AND Scotts old Auto Rubbers both think that...someones being lazy here.
I remember telling him to maybe change it on the catalogue, maybe he did...but got the feeling unless you own a classic american car, hes just not that interested. :/

Ill be calling them on monday morning ... This is my first time dealing with RareSpares and its been a nightmare ... I ordered 5 parts, he said ill get them in a week ... I called everyweek for 4 weeks and kept getting told its getting shipped monday ... 4 weeks later i get parts that dont fit ... Not a happy chappy ...

Any ideas where i can get some to suit?

That's pretty lousy. You should be getting a pretty good price going by their performance so far.

Attached is a pic of the profile of the rubber I had, sorry can't remember part numbers etc, I think I actually bought these off eBay as rare spares parts but no longer required.

The inner ones I have are Part Number DB4015 from RS but I haven;t fitted them as the originals are fine.
