#1 WTB: Oval-port head Adelaide SA. Urgent!
clyons8 Posted on: 2010/12/24 6:18
Hi looking to buy or even borrow an oval port head just to keep me on the road over the next week or so. Until I get mine fixed. If you're willing to lend it to me I'm more than happy to pay cash.

Prefer one that is in working condition.

PM me with what you have available. Will look at interstate offers as well but need one quite urgently so local is best at the moment.

So I am guessing you found the noise you were looking for?

And it was in the head ?

Let me know if you can't find a head locally, I have a couple of (very) scruffy H89's and a H75 you can borrow if needed, they would require work as they have been sitting for quite some time.

Yeah I wrote in the other thread that I think you were right. It has to be the one of the seats perhaps the stems.

I'm pulling the head down tonight to have a proper look see. I just went by the compression test (which was wrong anyway due to a faulty instrument).

Thanks for the offer Dean, there aren't many Adelaide members so I may take you up on that offer. Will see how it goes.

I have a H89 that is not being used atm, i started to pull out the valves to put in the dbl springs. i got 3 out then realised i lack the tool to finish the job. it would take 10mins to have it complete again.
Do you have a spring compressor?

I havent run this head but it seems to be in workin order and was advertised as working when i bought it..

Thanks for the offer tom. I've just fitted a round port head and a single sidedraft manifold in the hope that I will see/hear the results I want.

If the noise is still there after all of this I'm going to throw this engine off the pier at at the beach

I'll let you know how it goes, the round port head seems to have a buggered thread for one of the rocker assembly bolts but I;m going to run it briefly in the hope that this fokken annoying tapping sound will be resolved.

@ ssskiwi I pulled the head apart and tapped on and around the seats hoping to hear some vibration from a loose seat......no dice. I also tapped the valve guides to see if there was any movement, no dice. I checked the guides for wear, all good. I also checked that the rocker arm wasn't hitting the top of the valve guide from the huge cam lift, looks all clear.

If this new head doesn't erradicate the noise my next suspicion is a loose cam sprocket, maybe a loose tensioner ( BTW: no debris in sump from plastic tensioner pad and no abnormal timing issues as a result of loose sprocket). Failing that I will look for a loose gudgeon pin, or sloppy cam bearing (new when rebuilt) but #OOPS# me I'm stumped if the noise is still there after all this.
