Hi everyone as i have said in previous threads i am in the process of doing up a ute as i get the money i do what i can, going to be a very slow build but it will be worth it.Anyway putting a borgie 4 pinion diff in it moving the leaf springs in and tubbing it to the rails only, would like to tub it properly but can be done anymore by law anyway Dave how is doing the conversion for me said that we should put coilovers with the leaf springs will this be a good setup for street/1/4 mile.My next question is can u 2or4 link leaving the chassie.

mmm so many things to say about that post
Why are you moving the leaves in if you are only mini tubbing it? they wont get in the way as they are in line with the chassis...so if the chassis stays in the same spot then anything that the leaves are getting in the way of the chassis will also get in the way of But, illegal as it may be, you could probably move the whole rail in on both sides by drilling out the spot welds the whole way along the rails then rewelding them across a bit. no one would really be able to tell if you didnt move them too far Coilovers with leaves you say, dont really see the point in that. If you arent running any extra arms and you compare it to a properly rated leaf setup with the right shock, i see no advantage in doing coilovers You can quite easily do a 3 or 5 link setup without moving chassis rails...who gave you the idea that you would have to do that

Move the leafs in and you can potentially get wider tires under there. But you can already get 7" wide tires on a stocker.
Leafs are good for 1/4 mile. Just use slapper bars to control axle tramp. Simple but effective.

really? i thought the springs ran parallel to the chassis rails.. could be wrong tho, been a while since last looking under a ute.
Another alternative to slapper bars (tramp rods) are Caltracs, ill be using a set of them on mine. http://www.calvertracing.com/caltracs.php

I am hoping to get atleast 8.5 with 255 tyres under the arse end

got a pic of the leaves sitting 2 inchs out of the chassis rails?
cos the leaf mounts are centred on the chassis...and the chassis is straight, and the leaves are straight and im pretty sure there is only about an inch of space between the stock wheel arch inner edge and the chassis rail outer edge anyway, atleast in sedans and wagons there is. so theres not a whole heap of extra room to gain

but as i said above, if you are sneaky you can move the chassis rails without leaving any real evidence. then you can "mini tub" it to fit 255s easy enough
anyway on the coil front, if its not a circuit car you can do like im going to on my wagon and go a 3 link setup. so you only have 2 main arm that are each attatched to the diff at 2 point to hold the diff in place and then a panhard rod to get a better picture of it google nissan patrol or 80 series onwards landcruiser front end setups. same kinda idea but less stock looking only real disadvantage i can see from going 2 link instead of 4 link is that the pinion angle will change with suspention movement in the same arc as the control arms are moving in. unlike 4 link where you can have the angle stay constant or move on a different arc but as a modified 1200 usually doesnt have a whole heap of rear end travel i'd imagine the effects would be mimimal and by going 2/3 link you dont have to worry about making space for the top arms to go, as im pretty sure the fuel tank in a ute gets in the way of where on top arm would idealy go You can view topic.
