L16 vs A15 engine block weight bare

Hello peeps, Unfamilia kindly offered an l18 and l16
bottom end and I stripped them and weighed them for interests sakes, very messy but I have freaky results. L18 was 46kgs L16 was 35.8kg Got Angle grinder & carefully lightened the L16 further to 34.95kgs now thats without boring out from 83 to 85mm which should find another 700 to 1kg to 34kg Just weighed an a12 bored out to 76mm bores or 3mm over 30kgs on the buzzer camshaft probably 1.5kg and 73mm bore anothe 1kg so 32kg stock? Now does anyone have a bare a15 or a14 to weigh? one with and without the camshaft? The A15 head is 9kg and Z18et head is 16kg L18 crank 15.5 full counterweight unlightened A15 crank ? So theres is probably 10kg difference in when Im finished. Which with billet coilovers & no front leaf should be equal Then heavier specially preppared Don Smallgoods 71B no2 with stumpy rear another 20kg all up? will confirm

i knew it didnt add that much weight to the front end... doesnt feel anything like a lead tipped arrow.

Definitely a good upgrade compare to the heavier L18W
and L20B blocks which range from 10 to 18kgs heavier. I wonder if Bige would now the weight of an A15 bare with maincaps and camshaft at least.

Why is the L18 short block 10kg heaver than L16? They are the same size block, same deck height.

Thats right DD I couldnt understand this myself
on Ozdat.com till I did the weighing at home. Its been explained to me by a genius in L series engines who`s building the most radical L20b Ive ever could imagine with inlet valves that change angles to be more central during full lift in order to avoid the sides of the bores and make the inlet charge more centered away from the walls. Unlike the A series which has valve pockets at the top of bores. Well he explained that the L18 was to be used for a diesel version with bigger bores & was cast thicker round the bores in some cases making them siamesed for extra strength. These blocks later labelled L18W. L16 max bore is 86 before wall flex causes blow-by where some rare L18s can go to 90mm!!! If anyone wants a very rare L18 x-rayed block from a Laurel confirmed to take 90mm bores pls PM me for owners details as he has only 2 over 40 years building them.

OK I weighed a bare A14 block (with main caps) and it was 73lbs. It is a modded block for E-sereis head but I doubt they have any effect beyond a few grams.
Now I did weigh my A12 engine, with header flat slide carbs and 14lb flywheel it was 170-171lbs. I didn't have the started bolted to it so you would have to add that to it. Tom

Thank you Tom! is that without camshaft for the a14?
It would mean that my L16 at 35kg - 33kg = 2kg heavier. heavier but the other day I went ballistic and angle grinded away all sharp edges. The engine block breather was staring at me to be freed as I studied the inner wall and worked out I could chop it off and not sacrifice rigidity Off it came yet without cleaning up the inside casting slags. So my block is at 34.95 using digital scales. Getting very interesting.

Really? just under the exhaust in the middle
there is a protrusion looks like a box in the casting and has a hole at the top. Unless it has been covered with a welsh plug? You can view topic.
