IRS rear end using Volvo De Dion rear
D
Posted on: 2011/8/14 12:30
This is a thread for my interest in going IRS
for my datsun 1000 tudor. I will have to shorten the De Dion tube to suit the width of the 1K. Im searching for an alloy lsd IRS centre from either a Honda or whatever is easy to get in LSD. 1. pic is what it looks like under a volvo 360 2. From my backyard the main beam 3. PCD is easy to set for 114.3 x 4 as in can be seen in exploded diagram view. Volvo 360 uses a weak 5 speed combined with diff transaxle and open centre so cant use that rubbish. ![]()

IRS in the simplest way for an original leaf setup car.
Always wanted IRS and 99 inch wheelbase for 1000. Easiest way for my limited "hands on" skills. The Volvo 360 is actually a DAF which got bought by V. The Daf had leaf sprung rear and later upgraded to DD IRS. DeDion lets me angle the wheels to a fixed camber degree by simply angling the outer brackets if need be. ![]()

should be great. never seen a de dion with leaves. for my honda i have an r160 with inboard discs custom tube and early passat hubs and uprights. i'm thinking of changing to an early rav 4 diff (easy to adapt and mount, and 2 door has a torsen)and has cv's. have you worked out a camber angle yet? are you looking for an alloy centre for weight? diff will be sprung weight not unsprung.moving the brakes inboard saves unsprung weight. cant wait to see it fitted.

True about the unsprung weight but if I can go alloy
Id be happier keeping with the featherweight theme. Its a shame about the Rav4 as there was one at Kylsith not long ago (Disco Bob I think you wouldhave seen it?) Any chance of a peek at your inboard discs or info? I was thinking of using alfa inboards, CVs and uprights easy to find and adapt to the volvo setup. Im shortening the Volvo single leafs which are very solid even overkill for the thouee but better safe than rooted. theres another also using a set of leafs http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia ... RRearViewUnderCropped.jpg Here you can see the Alfa inboards, CVs etc

How ironic someone posted this; I'd been thinking about the possible advantages of a De Dion suspension set up. Rather than having to fab all the IRS pick up points you could use any IRS set-up and connect the uprights to the De Dion tube. I was thinking MX5 / Miata parts with possibly alloy tube.................just a thought.

Been thinking about it since I perved under a volvo 360 at
the end of last century :) but only 3 years ago got the bits and now finally decided its time. Only because Ive seen the other day some suv with alloy irs diffs, eg. Rover Freelander and Nissan Xtrail. However the Rover being the simples has no cheap LSD avail as far as I know.

As long as the axles move independently thats the whole point.
Alfa Romeo specifically chose Dedion over other designs for ease of tuning and results from the start. Triumph had heaps of issues as did other companies with the normally accepted IRS setups. Camber can be changed dramatically also with DeDion. You can view topic.
