#1 60 series gear ratios
DISMO Posted on: 2011/10/23 6:57
hey guys has anyone had a 60 series 5 speed for the a series modified as in getting gears re cut to different ratios, i have a couple mates who have had rx7 boxes done but they were complete gear sets and not re-cut.. anyone know of any or a good company in australia?

I thought getting gears cut to order would be very expensive. So your mates bought off the shelf boxes for the rx7? Might be cheaper to find a diff ratio to suit, it's not a solution to you problem but cutting new gears surely is thousands of dollars?

Cheapest I heard was 500aud a gear
There is a chinese company in NingBo
that also dog custom gears orders
but cant remember their name or the
middle man who used them. They didnt
do the straight cuts ones nor do I care
for noisey gearing. You best be is the
T5 with 1095usd close ratio gearset of
any choice under the sun and used in
most kit cars and replice lotus 7 cars.
The T5 is used in more engines than any
mass produced box and easiest to modify.

yeah mate off the shelf standard rx7 boxes not sure what series but sent them away and got complete new gear sets put in with any ratio required, roughly 6k to get that done, but with the datsun gears apparently you cant just bang a new set of gears in they have to be re cut because of the way they attach the the shafts or something stupid?.. and t5 as in early celica/sprinter gearboxes? thanks guys by the way

You can do custom ratio's for just about any type of gearbox, the limit is only how much cash you have. Albins do it, as do many others. Holinger used to do it but we have enough work to worry about so we don't generally do stuff like that any more. But stranger things have happened. The trick is to find someone who has done it before, so they have the drawings and hobs ready to go. Reverse engineering can get time consuming.

I am also interested in getting gears cut.

I agree that changing diff ratios helps but it also turns first gear into a waste of time so I also think a gear ratio change should go hand in hand with it.

The big problem with 60series boxes is the one piece countershaft so it either needs to be completely replaced with a splined shaft/gears setup or the old gears machined off and new ones welded back on.

All very $$ but I figure if guys are spending $10k+ on a CA swap, why not throw the same amount at an A series driveline..
