A12 Tuning/Rebuild

Hi all, I've got a 79 sunny b310 with a stock a12.
It blows a bit of smoke, and has a knock (Mechanic thinks piston pin knock) I have considered getting it rebuilt, or just getting a tune Does anyone have any info on how much better the engine performs after a tune? And a bit of a long shot here, but is it worth the money getting it rebuilt? Any help appreciated Cheers, Zak

Because it is smoking, you should find out the cause.
* If it is due to low compression, then put new rings in it. Measure the pin clearances when you do this and replace as necessary. * If it is due to worn valve guides, have the head rebuilt Quote: Does anyone have any info on how much better the engine performs after a tune? There isn't much to a tune-up on an A12. Usually it does not require any new parts except new points. Just re-torque the head gasket, re-gap the sparkplugs, search for and fix vacuum leaks. Inspect the cap, rotor and plug leads, only replace if damaged. Replace the points then set timing and mixture. Enjoy. Quote: is it worth the money getting it rebuilt?

Thanks heaps DD, you seem to be an absolute guru.. I'll definitely be looking into a tune, the only reason I'm considering a rebuild is that I question my cars' reliability.
